We recently featured Audrey Hepburn here at celebrityicing.com, so this month when I was looking for a new celebrity to feature, I naturally thought of the other famous Hepburn…

Katherine

Born on May 12 1907, Katherine Hepburn was a Taurus. Although I’m sure she would have thought the very idea was ‘poppycock.’ Yet Taurians (is that what you call them?) are known for their steadiness of character, calmness in the face of obstacles,and steadfast nature. Characteristics that even Kate probably wouldn’t snort at.

Katherine Hepburn appeared in many,  many movies over a long lasting career. She won 4 Oscars and is deeply respected today for her talent and her strong personality, particularly considering the era in which she started her career.

Katherine Hepburn was able to portray very strong women who were also uniquely vulnerable – this made her roles very interesting (and timeless).

She also had a talent for comedy and an ability to be beautiful and funny at the same time.

My favorite Hepburn movies has to be Philadelphia Story – I think I’ve seen it more than any other, and I still enjoy it every time. There is a another version of the same story starring Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby, and it is also good – but not AS good as the Hepburn version.

One of my all time favorite actors Audrey Hepburn, is probably more famous for her style than her actual acting talent (although she had both).

Here are some classic Hepburn looks to inspire your shopping.

Breakfast At Tiffanys

This is probably one of the most famous looks for Hepburn, from the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. While main character Holly Golightly would tell you that today smoking is “tres boring”, the rest of the look stands up very well to time. Calvin Klein makes a similar dress, which is available at Macy’s.

A vintage, or retro-inspired, beaded necklace like the one below from foxfirevintagejewelry.com would make your Hepburn look.

Some fancy looking earrings that are actually cubic zirconia (because when you are Holly Golightly, you cash in the expensive gifts for rent and then wear something that just looks good).

Charade

Here is Hepburn in one of my favorites, the movie Charade (she starred with Cary Grant). This is the classic movie character disguise used, not something that would work in real life, so only wear this if you want to get noticed, not if you want to hide out.

A plain white scarf is tres boring, so how about this Longchamp scarf instead? A New York themed scarf as a nod to Breakfast at Tiffany’s or a Paris-themed scarf in honor of the setting of the movie Charade.

Another favorite photo. Look closely – she’s basically wearing a yoga sweatshirt, but she makes it look so classy. Almost makes you want to NOT like her, but it’s impossible because she’s so cute.

What Season Are You?

This week we continue our flashback to the 80′s – when everyone was getting their colors done. I just discovered that this method of determining which colors work for you originates from a book called “Color Me Beautiful” by Carole Jackson - which spent 4 years on the NY Times bestseller list. For more information straight from the source, you should visit her website at carolejackson.com – she provides samples of color swatches that you can refer to once you identify which season suits you.

Are You a Spring?

In the last article we explained that Winters have cool skin tones and that they look good in black and bright colors. An easy way to remember this is that Winter has cool temperatures. Spring, on the other hand, is when things start to warm up – and if you’re a Spring you will look better in warm tones to flatter your complexion. If you did the paper test described in the Winter article and your face cast a yellowish tone on the paper, then you are a Spring.

Springs look great in warm colors such as coral and turquoise. See how the turquoise blouse compliments Mrs. Garrett’s skin tone?

Certain shades of green, red, blue, and pink also work well for them (think of bright Spring flowers in the sunshine). While black and white look best on Winters, a Spring can wear soft black and ivory.

Are You a Winter?

Get Ready to Take a Test

Go get yourself a white piece of paper. Don’t worry, you’re not going to have to write a test – you just need it to determine whether you have a warm or cool complexion! You’ll also need a mirror. Hold the paper up to your face and then look in the mirror. Does your face seem to cast a yellow tone to the paper, or is it more blue?

Yellow Equals a Warm Skin Tone; Blue Equals a Cool Skin Tone

Examples below: Vinnie is a winter. He looks good in black and navy blue. Winters usually have dark hair and fair or olive skin.

If you’re a Winter, let the season inspire you.

The winter world is high contrast – bright white snow; deep black night.

Cher starred in a string of movies in the 80′s (Silkwood, Mask, Mooonstruck, Mermaids).

Bright, intense, vivid colors also look great on you -but stay away from shades of brown or faded colors – they will make you look faded, too; whereas Winter colors will really make you POP.

When selecting colors to wear – think jewel tones. Vibrant, deep and vivid colors such as emerald, ruby, or sapphire complement a winter’s cool.

Have You Ever Had Your Colors Done?

During the 1980′s women would often get their ‘colors done’ – a trained specialist (like for example, one of your mom’s friends) would evaluate your coloring (hair, complexion, eyes) and then tell you if you were a Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter. You would be told what colors you should wear based on this evaluation.

This type of oversimplification and rigid rules of style went out with those scarves you were supposed to be able to wear in 150 different ways (instruction booklet attached).

Yet, there are colors that suit different people – and they can still be a good foundation to build a personal look on.

Today fashion rules are much more flexible (and fun) but not everyone has the confidence to break the rules (or the eye to do it well). In that case, we start a fun 4 part series based on the 4 seasons:

We continue our series on style inspired by the star signs this week with a feature on Libras (September 23 – October 22).

Libra’s love to dress up. They also love art and public service. They do not like to be rushed and they also dislike sloppiness and dirtiness.

Catherine Zeta Jones’ beauty and style is an attention-stealer where ever she goes. She manages to combine elegance and sophistication with a healthy vibrance, not easy to pull off successfully.

I just saw Naomi Watts in ‘The International’ which I really liked (I was disappointed to see that it didn’t get very good reviews). I’m due to have my baby very soon so I guess I have babies on the brain more than usual.

Should Babies Wear Jewelry?

Some cultures seem to prefer jewelry on their children very young (bracelets, earrings). My mom bought all of her girl grandchildren tiny engraved bracelets when they were born – not sure if this is  German thing or just a personal predilection – she also buys child-size silver cutlery for all the kids…

Of course, if you are going to string your baby with bling make sure it is safe.

Always observe the age guidelines for jewelry – most of it is not practical for children under 3 (it is only worn during a photo session or special ceremony like a christening and then kept as a keepsake or heirloom). For specific information about recalls, please refer to ConsumerReports.org. Here are some basic guidelines:

• Don’t leave children unattended (this includes naptime, bedtime)
• Purchase jewelry from a reputable jewelry store (you get what you pay for).
• Be suspicious of any jewelry purchased from a vending machine or dollar/discount store.
• Watch for small pieces and jewels that might detach (choking hazards).
• ”Breakaway” clasps or weak elastic is the best choice for all jewelry worn around a child’s neck (or better yet, just avoid this jewelry until the child is older).
• Ask the store to confirm what metals are contained in the jewelry. Good jewelry stores (online included) will provide this information on their websites.
