Dakota and Elle Fanning

Sisters Dakota, 17, and Elle, 13, have been in the acting game for over ten years. Though they haven’t portrayed sisters on camera (yet), Elle started her career at age 2 by playing a younger version of her sister’s character in the film Oscar-nominated film, “I Am Sam”. These blonde beauties are also fashionistas: Dakota appeared in a Marc Jacobs campaign, and Elle was invited to the Chanel couture show in Paris, both at the young age of 12.  Elle’s films include Reservation Road, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Super 8; while Dakota’s famous flicks include The War of the Worlds, The Runaways, and the Twilight Saga movies. The girls are known for their bohemian-chic fashion sense, and flair for mixing high fashion with thrift store funky. Kourtney, Kim and Khloe Kardashian

You can’t talk about screen sisters without mentioning the Kardashians! Kourtney, Kim and Khloe have long been Hollywood socialites, but dove into TV stardom in 2007 with the reality series Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Since then the trio have starred in a number of spin-offs, and created a merchandising empire including clothing lines (most notably Kardashian Kollection for Sears), tanning products, and jewelry. I found this engagement ring (below)- it is the same style, but not as overwhelming. I love the fact that it is so elegant – it isn’t too busy or flashy, but there is no doubt that it is impressive at the same time. It also manages to be retro and modern looking at the same time.

Princess Audrey Hepburn

Back to the movies… Audrey Hepburn was never royalty in real life but she was definitely princess material - as seen in her role in Roman Holiday.

These earrings aren’t an exact match to what Hepburn is wearing above, but I wanted to include them because I just love them. Prince’s son and Madonna’s daughter are both 16 years old this year, as are Jude Law’s son and Martin Lawrence’s daughter. Lindsay Lohan’s little sister Dakota turns 16 this year as well.

Taylor Momsey

Jenny or “Little J” on Gossip Girl started off as a sweetheart and ended up rock n roll eye shadowed tart. Taylor Momsey seems to have a similar split personality in real life. Here she is, looking fresh-faced and age appropriate.

It was actually a challenge to find pictures of Corde wearing more than board shorts. Snoop Dogg’s oldest son’s closet must be full of swimwear, which seems appropriate for an athletic 16 year old teenager growing up in California. I believe the photo below (he is on the left) was taken at his 16th birthday party, last May.

This look is quite formal for a teen, but probably mandatory at many private schools… the small earring is a subtle expression of his personal style.

Ever notice how the TV show Parenthood is actually just a more middle class version of the cancelled (but awesome) TV show Dirty Sexy Money? Let’s compare shall we? And while we are at it, we can compare the character’s styles as well…

Dirty Sexy Money

The Darling family look to sensible, reliable family man Nick George (played by Peter Krause) to solve all of their problems. He has his own problems but then shrugs his shoulders and/or rolls his eyes and then dives in to their drama and straightens their lives out. The demands on his time and his emotional reserves by this family are a source of stress on his own marriage and his relationships with his children.

Parenthood

The Braveman family look to sensible, reliable family man Adam Braverman (played by Peter Krause) to solve all of their problems. He has his own problems but then shrugs his shoulders and/or rolls his eyes and then dives in to their drama and straightens their lives out. The demands on his time and his emotional reserves by his extended family are a source of stress on his own marriage and his relationships with his children.

(Yes, I know that the TV show Parenthood is supposed to be based on the popular movie starring Steve Martin and Keanu Reeves. Other than having a star-studded cast, the two productions don’t strike me as similar. In fact, I’ve seen the movie a few times but did not even make the connection at first. The character names have been revised from the 80′s Karen, Frank, and Larry Buckman to more contemporary names like Sarah, Crosby, and Max Braverman.Ron Howard directed the movie and he is Executive Producer for 2 episodes of the TV series so far.)

The Characters

You can spot many parallels between the characters in both shows, from the Alpha and treacherous Patriarch, strong yet somewhat spaced out Matriarch, irresponsible (but growing) brother, the list goes on – just look at the two cast photos above and compare (they are like mirror reflections of each other).

What Season Are You?

This week we continue our flashback to the 80’s – when everyone was getting their colors done. Are You A Summer?

In the last article featuring this topic, we explained that “Spring” people look better in warm tones like peach and coral, and yellow gold jewelry flatters their complexion. It makes sense that Summers also look great in warm colors – it is the warmest season after all. However, Summers actually fall into the “cool” category. Examples of cool colors are: green, blue, and violet. Imagine pinks and greens with a blue undertone, and you are on the right track.

Take the Test

Summers are the least common color – it seems like all Summers have naturally blond hair color, which is also rare. To be even more specific, we’re talking cool blonds, not yellow blonds… If you’re a summer your face will reflect a blue tone rather than a yellow tone onto a white piece of paper.

You will look best in subtle color combinations and should avoid contrasts. Summers can still be bold, but it is best to stick to one bright color – like the red Christina is wearing below (note that this red has a blue undertone, making it work for a Summer).

Vanessa has that whole boho thing going on. She dresses like a free spirit; however, if you look closely you can see that a lot of thought actually goes in to her outfits, which suits her character. Often she is wearing more bangles and necklaces that a carnival fortune teller, and has the big earrings to match.

Serena

Generally Serena looks like you wish you would look if you rolled out of bed wearing the same clothes from the night before… tousled hair, and thrown-together outfits, with skirt lengths and footwear inappropriate for daytime. Recently, she’s cleaned up her act quite a bit so picture the same look only with clothing fresh from the dry cleaners (and it looks like she finally found her hair brush – it only took her two years…).

Okay, I’m being a bit hard on her – I have to admit, I’m jealous – I miss the days where I didn’t feel self conscious in mini skirts and heels. This look definitely has an age limit – if you dress like Serena during the day and you’re under 35- you’re edgy; if you’re over 35 you’re something else… not sure what…

Blair

Oh, Blair. Not everyone can pull this one off. Many of us would end up looking like a sunday school teacher or a time traveler from 1985. You can get a similar look by shopping at any store that caters to older women (Ann Taylor Loft for example). Of course, this only works if you’re not actually already old. Just add a headband, or scarf-choker, and presto! At best, if this style appeals to you, I would recommend that you shoot for the ‘sexy librarian’ look – that might work. Don’t forget to add some pretty (and preppy) jewelry, like the bracelet below.

I’m due to have my baby very soon so I guess I have babies on the brain more than usual.

Some cultures seem to prefer jewelry on their children very young (bracelets, earrings). My mom bought all of her girl grandchildren tiny engraved bracelets when they were born – not sure if this is  German thing or just a personal predilection – she also buys child-size silver cutlery for all the kids…

Always observe the age guidelines for jewelry – most of it is not practical for children under 3 (it is only worn during a photo session or special ceremony like a christening and then kept as a keepsake or heirloom). For specific information about recalls, please refer to ConsumerReports.org. Here are some basic guidelines:

• Don’t leave children unattended (this includes naptime, bedtime)
• Purchase jewelry from a reputable jewelry store (you get what you pay for).
• Be suspicious of any jewelry purchased from a vending machine or dollar/discount store.
• Watch for small pieces and jewels that might detach (choking hazards).
• ”Breakaway” clasps or weak elastic is the best choice for all jewelry worn around a child’s neck (or better yet, just avoid this jewelry until the child is older).
• Ask the store to confirm what metals are contained in the jewelry. Good jewelry stores (online included) will provide this information on their websites.
