Dakota and Elle Fanning

Sisters Dakota, 17, and Elle, 13, have been in the acting game for over ten years. Though they haven’t portrayed sisters on camera (yet), Elle started her career at age 2 by playing a younger version of her sister’s character in the film Oscar-nominated film, “I Am Sam”. These blonde beauties are also fashionistas: Dakota appeared in a Marc Jacobs campaign, and Elle was invited to the Chanel couture show in Paris, both at the young age of 12.  Elle’s films include Reservation Road, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Super 8; while Dakota’s famous flicks include The War of the Worlds, The Runaways, and the Twilight Saga movies. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

Twins Mary-Kate and Ashley started their careers as infants on the TV show Full House. During the 8 years the show ran, the twins made several videos, as well as creating their own brand of merchandise. These ventures earned them a place on the Forbes’ celebrity 100 list when they were 16. The girls are known for their bohemian-chic fashion sense, and flair for mixing high fashion with thrift store funky. They love accessorizing, and often sport big framed sunglasses and stand-out jewelry. This star diamond necklace would look sweet with their crinolined dresses.

Kourtney, Kim and Khloe Kardashian

You can’t talk about screen sisters without mentioning the Kardashians! Kourtney, Kim and Khloe have long been Hollywood socialites, but dove into TV stardom in 2007 with the reality series Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Since then the trio have starred in a number of spin-offs, and created a merchandising empire including clothing lines (most notably Kardashian Kollection for Sears), tanning products, and jewelry. As for the Kardashian ladies’ icing, Kim has recently shed her 12-carat engagement ring after divorcing husband, Kris Humphries, but Khloe still dons the 9-carat diamond trio engagement ring from Lamar Omar. There’s been a resurgence in the popularity of Americana, roots and folk music over the last few years. Acoustic instrument sales are up, and you can hear banjo’s twanging away on the radio in the even the poppiest of rock songs. These two artists came into the mainstream with 2000’s hit film, “O Brother Where Art Thou”. They collaborated on its award-winning soundtrack to sing the hitI’ll Fly Away.

Gillian has been busy all summer touring the country’s festivals in support of her album, The Harrow and the Harvest, with musician David Rawlings (don’t let the lack of a wedding ring fool you – this musical duo have been an item for years).

These big blue eyes have captured the hearts of many on TV and the movies, but did you know she could sing, too? Zooey has been the ‘she’ of She and Him with M. Ward since 2008. They released their third album, A Very She and Him Christmas in October, and have been at the top of the charts ever since. For those who can’t take their eyes off this beauty, she’s also recently taken off her wedding ring. As her favorite designer is none other than Chanel, the jewelry we’ve picked for her to wear is a classic diamond tennis bracelet.

Sarah was a mere 18 years old when her first album, Song up in Her Head, came out in 2009. She’s a musical genius, with two award-nominated albums under her belt by the age of twenty. Her instruments include guitar, banjo, and mandolin, but her signature instrument is the mando-cello. Accomplished, but still young, Sarah seems to have a penchant for fun, dangling earrings. These are the pearls we picked for her.

Yes, yes, you know all about Prince William and Kate Middleton’s looming wedding – you couldn’t avoid it if you tried. So, in honor of the royal wedding ruckus, I thought I would pay tribute to some of my favorite princess brides of the past.

The Best Princess Bride Ever

Beginning with the best princess bride ever, of course- even if her dress was kind of wacky.

This white gold necklace and pearl pendant are perfect for the story book princess look: not too fancy, yet beautiful – very appropriate if you are going to be saved from marrying evil Prince Humperdinck by a devoted farm boy (or is he the Dread Pirate Roberts?).

Then there is Princess Grace, as we shift our attention from a princess in a movie to a movie star that became a princess.

I don’t think Hollywood could have created a princess as perfect as her if they tried.

I found this engagement ring (below)- it is the same style, but not as overwhelming. I love the fact that it is so elegant – it isn’t too busy or flashy, but there is no doubt that it is impressive at the same time. It also manages to be retro and modern looking at the same time.

Princess Audrey Hepburn

Back to the movies… Audrey Hepburn was never royalty in real life but she was definitely princess material - as seen in her role in Roman Holiday.

These earrings aren’t an exact match to what Hepburn is wearing above, but I wanted to include them because I just love them. The clasp is called leverback style – it is a very retro look and also wonderful if, like me, you always lose those little things that are supposed to hold your earrings on. These earrings are perfect for an evening out, or for a special occasion any time of the day- they are guaranteed to make you feel like a princess!

I can’t believe it’s already September 1st! Here comes Fall!  This week we continue our flashback to the 80’s – when everyone was getting their colors done. Are You A Fall?

I think it’s safe to say that Lieutenant Commander Data (far right) is not a Fall. Those colors completely wash him out and make him look quite pasty.

Here’s the Test

Hold a piece of white paper up to your face and look for a yellow or blue reflection on to the paper. If you cast a yellow tone, you have a warm skin tone. This means you are either a Spring or a Fall. Autumns usually have brown hair and brown eyes, but there are exceptions. If you look good in brown, you are probably a Fall.

Fall is the best time to turn over a new leaf

What a perfect time to clean those non-flattering colors out of your closet! Falls are the easiest people to pick colors for, and this is the perfect time of year. If you’re a fall, look around you: the colors of the falling leaves, the deep greens of wet moss, and the deep orange of a pumpkin all look great on you.

Another strategy: go into your kitchen and take a look at those exotic spices on your shelf – those colors look great on you, too!

It’s hot outside, so it’s time to turn up the temperature and get your style sizzling!

Who Says You Can’t Wear Black in Summer?

Tips

If you are going to wear black during the hot days of summer just be aware of the fabric you select. Try natural fabrics like cotton, or my favorite – bamboo. A small percentage of synthetic fibre (rayon, spandex, etc) will help your clothes keep their shape and also prevent them from wrinkling.

When it comes to wearing black in the summer, think ‘less is more’. You don’t want to wear black clothing from head to toe, a black bikini or short summer slip dress will be more comfortable than a long sleeved shift or a full length skirt. Black and white are the ultimate high contrast combination for the intense light of a summer day and work well with most skin tones.

I love black straw sun hats with huge rims (think Audrey Hepburn) but they are not very practical for summer. You are not only wearing a hat to protect your hair and head from the sun, you are wearing it to keep cool and protect yourself from sun stroke as well – therefore black is not the best color choice. Wear a white hat or natural straw color instead.

Black capri-length bottoms are the perfect fit for running, whether you are a famous movie star or not. Will Smith on the importance of running and reading, two of my favorite hobbies…

It’s classier (and more convienient) when your jewelry is kept in one of these boxes. I have a few different spots for my jewelry, but it always tends to spread around the house eventually. I’ve found that it’s easy to hang on to my valuables when I have a spot for them in almost every room in my house. I tried just getting into the habit of always putting my jewelry in one spot, but I had to give up. Instead, I now have several places to look when I’m wondering where my wedding ring disappeared to. At least I know it’s in a safe place and not just resting on a kitchen windowsill or the fireplace mantle, where it could easily be dusted away into oblivion.

One of my all time favorite actors Audrey Hepburn, is probably more famous for her style than her actual acting talent (although she had both).

Here are some classic Hepburn looks to inspire your shopping.

Breakfast At Tiffanys

This is probably one of the most famous looks for Hepburn, from the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s. While main character Holly Golightly would tell you that today smoking is “tres boring”, the rest of the look stands up very well to time. Calvin Klein makes a similar dress, which is available at Macy’s.

Here is Hepburn in one of my favorites, the movie Charade (she starred with Cary Grant). This is the classic movie character disguise used, not something that would work in real life, so only wear this if you want to get noticed, not if you want to hide out.

Get Ready to Take a Test

Go get yourself a white piece of paper. Don’t worry, you’re not going to have to write a test – you just need it to determine whether you have a warm or cool complexion! You’ll also need a mirror. Hold the paper up to your face and then look in the mirror. Does your face seem to cast a yellow tone to the paper, or is it more blue?

Yellow Equals a Warm Skin Tone; Blue Equals a Cool Skin Tone

Examples below: Vinnie is a winter. He looks good in black and navy blue. Winters usually have dark hair and fair or olive skin.

If you’re a Winter, let the season inspire you.

The winter world is high contrast – bright white snow; deep black night.

Cher starred in a string of movies in the 80′s (Silkwood, Mask, Mooonstruck, Mermaids).

Bright, intense, vivid colors also look great on you -but stay away from shades of brown or faded colors – they will make you look faded, too; whereas Winter colors will really make you POP.

When selecting colors to wear – think jewel tones. Vibrant, deep and vivid colors such as emerald, ruby, or sapphire complement a winter’s cool.
